Feeding the feeders
Proper care of a bearded dragon, or any pet, be it lizard or rabbit, includes a varied, healthy diet. In keeping with our Summer of Reptiles, we're going to take a look at keeping our feeder insects alive and properly gut fed.
We know from the "Your Herbivore and You" care sheet the different vegetables to feed our herbivores and omnivores, and why. And while omnivore owners are familiar with feeding crickets mealworms, and super worms, not all are as familiar with their care. Check out this caresheet for feeding, gut loading, and housing information for these staples of a bearded dragon's diet.
Remember, a well fed insect is a well fed lizard.
Want to try something new?
We're also excited to announce that we are carrying more variety of insects for your lizard's health. We now have the highly nutritious, low fat reptiworm! Also called called calciworms, , they DON'T need to be supplemented with calcium as they contain the proper ratio of calcium and phosphorus already, and make a great addition to your reptile's diet. We also now have tobacco hornworms. These moth larvae are a super nutritious treat for you favorite bearded dragon, have a ton of protein, and, again, are easy to care for, as the culture comes complete with their food. Soon we are going to be carrying dubia roaches. Don't go "ewww" until you find out how amazing they are: they have more protein and less exoskeleton than crickets, are very easy to care for, make no noise, are slow moving, and produce NO odor. (If it helps, just think of them as dubia beetles.)
