Green cheek conures are a favorite among both experienced and novice bird keepers due to their playful natures, small stature, temperament, and relatively low noise level (compared to their larger cousins). They are very social birds, living in large flocks in the wild, so they need to interact with as much of the family as possible. Playful and intelligent, they can learn several words and tricks.

The turquoise green cheek conure is a color mutation on the normal green cheek appearance. Their feathers are a dusty blue pairing well with the grey head.

The pineapple is another one of the color morphs of the green cheek. Much more vibrant, with their yellow and red stripped breasts, these little birds are just stunning!

Look who just flew in (and boy are their wings tired!)

New to Wilmette Pet Center:

Ringneck parakeets

Indian ringnecks are considered to be some of the smartest birds, with a vocabulary that can compete with much larger parrots. They are known to be great at learning new tricks. Like many parrots, they do need frequent handling and attention to keep them tame and friendly, but with training and love they quickly become a beloved companion.

Kakarikis

This New Zealand species of parakeet is one of the most active in aviculture, always running, never sitting still, always moving (they are often seen running up and down the sides of their cage without using their beaks). They are very curious and inquisitive, so they get used to people very quickly. They are very friendly and confident with humans, always needing to be the center of attention! They definitely need plenty of time outside of their cages for exercise and socialization.

Bourke’s parakeet

Known as a very sweet, gentle, and good-natured species, Bourke’s Parakeets make good pets when hand fed as babies, which allows them to bond with their human caretakers. These are intelligent birds but are also mellow and quiet, especially compared to other parrot species.

Bourke’s Parakeets are an excellent introductory bird for those new to hookbills, both for their calm demeanor as well as their ability to entertain themselves.

The clowns of the bird world: sun conures!

The sun conure is one of the more popular conures of its size due to its stunning plumage, its extraordinary disposition, and its exceptional quality as a companion bird. Sun conures are lively, vocal, and expressive friends that, with proper attention, brings a lot of joy and laughs to their owner’s lives.

Personality & Behavior

These birds are playful clowns, lying on their backs or dangling from a rope toy – they are forever amusing. They are wonderful climbers and even love to hang upside down from perches and cage ceilings to get their owners attention. They can be very loving and affectionate and even cuddly to people they trust. They are also easily trained and enjoy the attention. This is a good family bird and will not “turn” on family members if they are kind and attentive to the bird.

Sun Conures are vocal and expressive birds. They have their ranges of calls and yells; it’s how they say hi to each other and how they announce that they’re happy. So in the morning and the evening, your sun conure will say “I’m here! I’m here! I’m here!”. They’ll yell when you come home to say hi, and when they want some attention, too.

They are capable of learning to talk, although their range is limited and their voices are squeaky and birdlike. They like to imitate amusing sounds (microwave beeps, etc.). They really enjoy human attention, especially if there is no other bird around for them to groom and play with.
